First day of fall!

It's a gorgeous day in downtown Pittsburgh. The sun is shining over the tops of buildings and the air is still warm, even though the seasons officially shift today. Flowers in alumni park are still in bloom and the few leaves we do have remain green, but for how much longer?

Breaking news!

Sources confirm that Michele Haney, 20, has received the package she ordered. Initial comments show that, as expected, she "is pretty psyched about it."

Pittsburgh Pirates Home Opener

Were you there?!

Pittsburgh Pirates home opener: Wow, I was definitely impressed. Honestly, I am a HUGE Philly fan and the Pirates and Penguins are last on the list of my favorite teams. However, this past Monday I had the chance to attend my first home opener and my first baseball game in Pittsburgh...I loved it. Beautiful weather, tons of people, great fun. I must admit I have fallen in love with the city and it's crazy fan atmosphere. Although I love my Philly teams, the Pirates impressed me on Monday with their 11-2 win over the Dodgers. I love sports and I love baseball, so anytime I get the opportunity to attend an exciting game like this one, (even if it is the Pirates) I am totally in.

Spring Fever for students at PPU!

Everyone must be sick of school by now...I know I am. Once flip-flops are pulled out and the temperatures hit 70+ degrees...spring fever is definitely underway. Less and less people are showing up for class, procrastination is becoming extreme, and the Point is filled with students who are tanning, reading and frolicking in the grass pretending to be athletes. It's basically gotten to the point where it is just too hot everywhere to do anything. The dorms are 100 degrees (mainly because the heaters are still cooking and Lawrence has no air flow) and clothes are annoying to wear at this point. Due to the extreme temperatures and lackadaisical attitudes from everyone (including myself), I vote for no more school for the semester. Who's with me?

from the mouth of the horizon comes warm white light

Pirates Opener

Spring officially arrives in Pittsburgh with the start of a new Pirates season. PNC Park and the surrounding streets overflowed with fans before the season opener on Monday. I asked a few fans what they're watching for this season.

Apologies for the poor editing, but this is the product of a person with a packed schedule and tons of school work. Yet another sign of spring!

Hydroxycut and Running

Currently I am sitting outside, sweating and it is 81 degrees out. It's April 6th. Either God is letting us enjoy a few nice days before the end of Earth or it's Spring. I'll take Spring.

But anyways, I am about to run and although I run year-round I keep it indoors during winter. Find a day like today and even if you had never run a mile in your life you find yourself wanting to go. This is only partially relevant to my post. I work at GNC and lately, since the weather is turning, everyone and their Mother have been coming in to buy Hydroxycut or some other fat burner. Now on top of running, I lift weights religiously and most people over winter tend to bulk up heavier than they want so they can cut it down around this time of year. Women, well most realize they packed on a few and want to get rid of it.

So two more signs of Spring? Hydroxycut and running. Hey Spring!

Walking on Sunshine Would Burn Your Feet

Tomorrow is going to be 80 degrees. Eighty. Degrees. That's like seas of fire in Pittsburgh terms. It's already hotter outside than it is in, which I consider to be a miracle almost as awesome as turning water into wine (the reverse of which I've been finding myself doing steadily more often as this semester progresses).
The best part is that I can remember just maybe two years ago being livid that it was snowing on April 4th. I remember Spring Break 04' at Splash Lagoon in Erie will a huge snowstorm was going on sometime around the beginning of April. Eighty degrees on April 6th? Unheard of!
I suppose someone, at this point, would bring up global warming and blah blah blah. And to them I say, Emily + Global Warming = BFFs 4 lyfe! Or, that is, until a tsunami wipes out wherever I'm living.

Opening Day 2010

Spring has finally sprung that can only mean one thing, the start of baseball season. This year the pirates opened the 2010 campaign with LA Dodger making a visit to PNC Park. Like years in the past the optimism for success of this years team is rather low. With only two players in the starting line-up from last years opening day (Andy LaRoche and Ryan Doumit) the expectation for the 18th consecutive losing season is there. But on this day the Pirates, bucked the trend and started the 2010 season off strong by defeating Dodgers 11-5 with 2 home runs from Garrett Jones and 5 solid innings by bucs starters Zack Duke. the Pirates hope to continue the winning streak when the face the Dodgers again tomorrow at 7:05 at PNC Park.

photographs of spring

Spring is erupting with a burst around the Steel City... here are some images to prove it.

Well it's opening day in the burgh

And the traffic is out of hand. Between the masses of people and the blocked roads there's no denying that it's opening day at PNC Park. Only in pittsburgh would a game sell out year after year for a record loosing team. Dear Pittsburgh, that's why I love you.

Little Feathered Demons

One of my least favorite signs of spring are bird. I know, how dare I? They're so singy and flappy and majestic-y.
However, they're also poopy and making-nests-in-the-awnings-of-my-house-y. The awning thing is the worst, as many a morning occurs when my feathery alarm clocks go off a little too obscenely early with their fighting and feeding and one other 'f' word.
The birds also lead to one of the most poignant signs of spring: the first botched carwash. My better half himself was one of the many who rushed to get all the salt washed off his car only to have it be completely (and hilariously) befouled and besmirched just hours later.
I have hopes that my views on birds will change someday, however. On one of the first nice days in early March we somehow managed to get to brunch at Bob Evans on a weekday. We were given a window seat surrounded by tables full of munching octogenarians, and outside the window was a tree with about 10 or 12 robins in it.
Every. Single. Table. was discussing those robins, and the wonder and joy and awe and Spring that they inspired. So maybe birds seem lovelier when you're 80? I simply cannot wait to find out.

Gotta Love Spring

So as I sit in a tremendous amount of traffic going down to the waterfront, I find it a good time to do a little Spring post. Some random signs that Spring is here are nice weather and with this nice weather comes, seemingly, EVERYONE leaving work earlier and earlier to enjoy it. So that's reason 1 for the traffic. The other? Road work. Gotta love it. Every Winter we get potholes that I swear I see men in there digging deeper. So let's take 4 lanes and restrict them to 1. During rush hour. Sweet.

And my last sign, that just popped into my head are allergies. Better go stock up on antihistamine's if you want to go outside...or make meth, but nevermind that. But seriously, they've only hit me once so far, thankfully. Let's keep it that way.

Hey Spring.

I'm thinking it's sprung

So I'm sitting in a Starbucks considering the Spring (cue Mattress Discounters commercial) since it can no longer be reasonably denied that Spring is what is going on right now on this 74 degree fair and cloudless day
Walking here, all the signs of it are evident. All both of the strategically placed trees are in bloom, maintenance men have been working at half speeds to put flowers around the bases of said trees and in the planters along the way, the pigeons are back in full stride (albeit slightly slimmer), and all around are the melodious sounds of contruction. There really is no better place in the world than Pittsburgh in nicer climes (except perhaps anywhere else).
It may be why everyone is so much more pleasant today too. On my way to Starbucks, I watched a man successfully pick up 2 ladies with the aid of a small Yorkie pup and I feel certain that it would not have gone nealy so well had it been 23 degrees and snowy.
Of course, the Starbucks barista in me has known it was Spring for reals for about 2 weeks now. About this time every year my Frappuccino elbow starts playing up, and mine's been aching lately. Then again, without that I would have absolutely no idea how to navigate the complex labyrinth that is Starbucks/ATT WiFi in order to log on and blog about Spring. So, score, I guess?

Ahh, Opening Day

Opening day *technically* started last night when the Yankees, unfortunately, lost to the Sox in BeanTown. But for Pittsburgh it starts today at 1:35 against the Dodgers. Fans sold out the nicest stadium in the MLB, you can tell by the haneous traffic on the parkway going inbound. I drove into class at 11:15 and traffic was terrible, and this is two hours before the game even starts. Undoubtedly, this fan base won't stick once they drop 10 games in a row. But ya never know, maybe this season will be different? Hey Spring!

It's SPRING!

Welcome back dear friend! After that snow stom I don't think any of is really thought you'd ever,And I mean never ever pay us a visit again. Seeing the tree in front of acedemic hall blooming with pretty white flowers does my little heart good. I think seeing all of the flowers in bloom has in general put this city in a better mood. Everyone just seems to be so much more happy. So thank you spring for coming back once again. Even if we had doubted you. :-)
